The LPS Journey

Early Learning

Welcome to our Early Learning Centre - where your child’s lifelong love of learning begins. Tailored for children aged three and up, our boutique three-day program offers a nurturing and enriching foundation that sets us apart.

  • Our Early Learning program offers flexible three-day options, allowing families to choose the days that best suit their needs. While many families find a Tuesday to Thursday schedule beneficial for providing a consistent mid-week routine, we understand that every family is different. Whether you prefer consecutive days or a spread-out week, this flexibility supports smoother transitions, strong relationship-building with educators and peers, and meaningful engagement in play-based learning. Our goal is to provide a nurturing environment that works for your family’s schedule while fostering your child’s growth and development.

  • Our Early Learning class offers a high staff-to-child ratio, with one teacher and two teacher aides always present. This allows for more individual attention, stronger relationships, and a safe, supportive environment where each child can thrive.

  • Our Early Learners are active members of our whole school community, taking part in school carnivals, social events, and parent-engaged activities throughout the year. This involvement helps them build confidence, feel a sense of belonging, and develop strong connections with peers, families, and staff across the school. By participating in these shared experiences, our youngest learners grow socially and emotionally while enjoying the fun and excitement of being part of a vibrant school community.

Kinder

Our Kindergarten program at The Launceston Preparatory School provides a gentle and nurturing bridge between Early Learning and Primary School. Within a thoughtfully structured environment, children are supported to grow in confidence as they begin to engage with more intentional learning experiences. While play remains at the heart of each day, routines are gradually introduced to reflect the rhythm of the primary years, helping children feel secure and prepared.

  • As part of our commitment to supporting every child's development, our Kindergarten students receive complimentary speech and language screening. This early screening helps identify any areas where additional support may be needed, ensuring timely intervention and setting children up for success in their communication and learning journey. It’s a valuable resource for families, offering peace of mind and expert guidance during these important early years.

  • Each week, our Kindergarten students enjoy integrated playtime with children from Early Learning to Group 1, fostering a strong sense of connection and belonging across age groups. These shared play sessions support social development, build friendships, and encourage leadership and empathy as children learn from and with one another. It’s a joyful and inclusive time that strengthens our school community and enhances each child’s learning through meaningful peer interactions.

  • Our Kindergarten students are introduced to a variety of specialised subjects, including Music, Sport, Library and Cultural Connections, led by dedicated specialist teachers. These educators bring expertise and enthusiasm to each session, enriching the children’s learning and sparking curiosity through engaging, hands-on experiences. By building relationships with specialist teachers early on, children feel more confident and connected as they transition through school.

Prep and Group 1

Prep and Group 1 mark the beginning of structured, explicit instruction in English and Mathematics, complemented by rich experiences in Philosophy, Art, Science, Digital Technology, HASS, and Drama. With specialist Music, Choir, Sport, and Library, students engage joyfully in the routines that make our educational journey unique. Couple this with wonderful community service and opportunities to integrate with older students within our school community and we have a remarkable foundation for primary school education.

  • We provide complimentary eye screening for all our Prep students to help ensure early detection of any vision issues. This important service supports your child’s learning and development by identifying potential concerns that could affect their progress at school. Early screening allows for timely referrals and interventions, giving every child the best opportunity to succeed in a clear and comfortable learning environment.

  • Prep and Grade 1 students at The Launceston Preparatory School engage in a well-rounded weekly timetable that includes core subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science, Philosophy, HASS, and Sport, alongside specialist areas like Health, Cultural Connections, Art, French, Digital Technologies, and Music. These diverse learning experiences foster creativity, critical thinking, cultural awareness, and fine motor skill development, laying a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

  • At The Launceston Preparatory School, Prep and Group 1 students develop confidence and connection by leading school celebrations and commemorative events. With gentle support, they take pride in planning and presenting at these events.

Group 2 / 3

Group 2 and 3 at The LPS serve as an important gateway to Senior Primary. In these years, students build strong organisational skills through increased responsibility for managing their learning tasks, time, and materials. This foundation prepares them for the greater independence expected in the later years of their schooling experience at The LPS.

  • Each week, our Group 2 and 3 students participate in dedicated resilience sessions designed to support their emotional wellbeing and personal growth. These sessions focus on building confidence, developing coping strategies, and encouraging positive relationships through engaging activities and discussions. By exploring themes such as empathy, problem-solving, and self-awareness, students gain valuable life skills that help them navigate challenges both in and out of the classroom.

  • In Group 2 and 3, students are introduced to structured homework to help build positive study habits and reinforce classroom learning. This gradual introduction supports the development of responsibility, time management, and independence in a supportive and age-appropriate way. Homework tasks are designed to be purposeful and achievable, encouraging students to take pride in their work while involving families in their learning journey.

  • Each term, our Group 2 and 3 students take part in exciting immersion activities that bring learning to life through hands-on experiences, excursions, and special in-class events. These activities are thoughtfully designed to align with our termly themes, deepening students' understanding and engagement with the topics they explore in the classroom. Whether it's a visit to a local site, interactive workshops, or creative projects, these immersive experiences spark curiosity, make learning memorable, and connect students more meaningfully to the world around them.

Group 4 / 5

Group 4 and 5 at The Launceston Preparatory School mark the exciting first steps on a unique leadership journey. In these years, students are encouraged to develop their own voice, take on meaningful responsibilities, and inspire their peers through example and action. It’s a time when leadership skills are nurtured with intention and care, setting the foundation for their future roles within the school community.

Through a variety of opportunities—from leading group projects to representing their classmates—students in Group 4 and 5 begin to understand the impact they can have as leaders. This early leadership experience helps build confidence, empathy, and a strong sense of responsibility, guiding them toward becoming thoughtful and capable leaders in Senior Primary and beyond.

  • Students in Group 4 and 5 enjoy an exciting annual camp experience, alternating each year between Hobart and Camp Clayton. These camps offer rich opportunities for personal growth, teamwork, and adventure in new and engaging environments. Whether exploring Tasmania’s capital or the beautiful northern coast, students build independence, strengthen friendships, and develop confidence through a range of hands-on activities and shared experiences. Camp is a much-anticipated highlight of the year, creating lasting memories and deepening the connections within our school community.

  • In Group 4 and 5, students step into the senior part of our school, embracing greater responsibilities and leadership opportunities. This important transition fosters a sense of pride, maturity, and community as students take on roles such as peer mentors, event helpers, and classroom leaders. Through these experiences, they develop essential skills in communication, teamwork, and decision-making, while setting a positive example for younger students. It’s a time of growth and empowerment, preparing them for future challenges with confidence and purpose.

  • Our D.E.E.P. program - Discovery and Exploring Extra Potential - is a vibrant extension of learning for our Group 4, 5, and 6 students. Each term, students choose from a wide range of hands-on, interest-based classes designed to ignite passion and uncover hidden talents. Options include martial arts, paper mache, mountain biking, animal lovers, magic, cooking, survival skills, and electronic music production. This unique program encourages curiosity, creativity, and confidence, while giving students the freedom to explore new interests and develop skills beyond the traditional classroom setting.

  • Each week, our Group 4, 5, and 6 students participate in dedicated debating classes that build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and foster critical thinking. Through structured discussions and respectful argumentation or challenge, students learn to express their ideas clearly, listen actively, and consider different perspectives. Debating not only enhances public speaking and reasoning skills but also nurtures empathy and a deeper understanding of others’ viewpoints - essential qualities for thoughtful, respectful, and engaged learners.

Legacy Leaders

(Group 6)

Group 6 at The Launceston Preparatory School represents the pinnacle of the LPS journey—our students step into their roles as Legacy Leaders with maturity, purpose, and pride. As the most senior members of our learning community, they embody the values cultivated throughout their time at LPS, leading with integrity, empathy, and thoughtfulness. Through immersive experiences, extension opportunities, and enriching learning both in the classroom and beyond the school walls at camps, students deepen their understanding of themselves and the world. This final year is designed to ensure a confident, well-prepared, and seamless transition to high school, shaping capable, reflective citizens ready to contribute positively to the world around them.

  • Our ‘Legacy Leaders’ program is a dedicated weekly class for our Group 6 students, focused on developing leadership skills and empowering them to make a lasting impact on their school community. Throughout the year, students engage in practical leadership activities, hear from inspiring local leaders, and take part in a special legacy project that allows them to shape a meaningful contribution to the school. This program encourages initiative, teamwork, and a sense of responsibility, giving students the tools to lead with confidence and leave a positive, lasting legacy as they prepare for the next stage of their journey.

  • The LPS Leavers are fortunate enough to experience two camps in their final year at the school, building a momentous finale to The LPS journey.

    Camp Carnacoo:
Across three nights away, students deepen teamwork and resilience through shared challenges. Reflective conversations spark group insight on leadership, responsibility, and caring for our environment.

    Mount Cameron Field Centre:
Immersed in nature for three nights, students face physical and mental challenges that foster grit, cooperation, and rich discussions about environmental stewardship and what it means to lead.

  • As part of our Legacy Leaders program, Group 6 students work in their house groups each term to plan and run a fundraiser for a chosen charity. This initiative gives students the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the wider community while developing key skills in organisation, teamwork and social responsibility. By taking ownership of each fundraiser, from planning to promotion, students learn the value of compassion, leadership and giving back, helping them grow into thoughtful, active citizens with a strong sense of purpose.
